Symbols Used in The Record Books
* = Denotes a record that has since been tied. The number of asterisks (*) indicates the number of years that tied the original record.
A = Accumulated precipitation (over 2 days). This flag is originally from the ECCC Archives.
BH = An in-between hourlies value (SPECI, retrieved from Frodo or metar generally).
C = Corrected value (an erroneous value in the ECCC Climate Archives was corrected using a source of official data).
D = Climate day changed from 12z-12z to 06z-06z.
DR = Via data shared by the Open Data Rescue Project ( https://opendatarescue.org/ )
E = Indicates a value that has been changed from the original ECCC Climate Archive value, for a variety of possible reasons. ---Note that I will gradually be adding explanations for these flags underneath the data tables, to reduce confusion and increase transparency.
G = The snow accumulation was actually graupel (not true snow, it's like in between snow and hail).
M = Based on incomplete data (some data are missing).
MR = Found in the document: Monthly Record, Meteorological Observations in Canada (https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/101651654)
MW = Found in the document: Monthly Weather Review, by the Meteorological Service of Canada (https://www.google.ca/books/edition/_/FRdKAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1) (https://www.google.ca/books/edition/_/eRJKAQAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1) ... among other links
O = Includes a value that was changed or added based on raw paper copies from Observers (retrieved from either met-acre.net or the Library and Archives of Canada in Winnipeg).
PJ = From the Upper Fort Garry Post Journal (or Red River Post Journal) (Hudson's Bay Company observations).
PL = For snowfall, an amount that may not be true snowfall accumulation. For example, ice pellets that the ECCC/observer assumed at 10:1 ratio, therefore does not represent true snowfall accumulation (ice pellets that accumulated at way less than 10:1 ratio). Alternatively, this flag could represent doubt whether there was actually snow (may have been small hail (GS) or ice pellets (PL)).
SN = Part of the rainfall amount was actually snow that melted on contact.
T = A trace.
U = Some precip from another station is included due to undercatch of snow at the Airport.
WFP = Value retrieved/confirmed in the Winnipeg/Manitoba Free Press using Newspaper Archives.
WL = For snowfall and snow depth, value is from Weatherlogics' measurements.
WTR = Value retrieved/confirmed in the Winnipeg Tribune using Newspaper Archives.
Z = Value is considered suspicious and should be treated with caution. Not enough information was available to change the value.
