Historical Cold
May 24, 1949 Hard Frost Damages Gardens - Victoria Day Cold
A record low of 23.7°F (-4.6°C) was observed at Winnipeg Airport early in the morning of Victoria Day, Tuesday May 24, 1949. (In the Archives it shows -4.4°C because ECCC rounds to the nearest °F). The cold spot in southern Manitoba was Neepawa at -5.0°C.
Gardeners reported much damage to plants, especially sensitive crops. Farmers were not too concerned since crops usually recover after early frosts. The cold was preceded by a couple centimetres of snow the day before. Newspaper sources: Winnipeg Tribune May 24 (page 1). Winnipeg Free Press May 24 (page 1). |
