Historical Wind Storms
May 10-11, 1959 Damaging Wind Storm
A strong low pressure system brought damaging winds late evening on May 10 and on May 11, 1959. Wind gusts reached 109 km/h at Winnipeg Airport and 114 km/h at Portage Southport.
The strong winds flipped over a light aircraft at Winnipeg Airport. Two walls of a concrete-block building under construction in Winnipeg were blown down, causing damage over 4,000$. Some telephone and power lines were knocked down but services were interrupted only briefly. There were also many other reports of minor damage. The system also brought some heavy rains with 13.0 mm at Winnipeg Airport, 24.9 mm at Gimli Airport and 35.1 mm at Portage Southport. The rains delayed spring seeding by about a week.
