Almost all precipitation in May fell on a single date (40.6 mm on May 22), showing that, in general, the extreme drought is continuing. In fact, southern portions of the city mostly missed out on the rain on May 22. As a result, southern parts of Winnipeg only saw around 25 mm of rain for the month. 50-75 mm fell through the night north of the city in the East St Paul and Birds Hill areas.
- Historically low river levels in Winnipeg exposed glass from breweries deposited a century ago. - Lowest water levels since the 1980s on Lake Minnewasta in Morden caused the city to issue restrictions on water usage. - May 15 thunderstorms produce clouds of blowing dust west of Winnipeg including at Winnipeg Airport. - Numerous fires throughout southern Manitoba during May as a consequence of the drought. A massive fire occurred in the Northern Interlake, easily seen on satellite imagery (see below). - Unusual ice storm struck southern Saskatchewan May 20-21, downing some power lines and trees. It was 30C just days earlier. - Severe thunderstorms May 24 west of Winnipeg with gusts up to 107 km/h in Elie and 90 km/h in Portage. - Sharp cool down late month brought rare late-season lake effect flurries off Lake Manitoba near Portage la Prairie on May 26. Several frosts occurred across southern Manitoba as well in the final week of May. Toronto had its second latest occurrence of snow on May 28 (trace amounts). Fargo had its latest frost since 1969 on May 28 as well. Snow was recorded in parts of North Dakota on May 27. |
