- October 20: Record maximum temperature of 25.0°C. Old record 23.9°C in 1875 and 1958.
- October 18: All-time lowest relative humidity for October of 15%. Old October record was 16% on October 11, 1960.
Widespread records were broken across southern Manitoba on October 20 with some of the highest temperatures ever experienced that early in the season. Winnipeg's high of 25.0°C was the latest occurrence of temperatures of 25°C or higher since October 23, 1963. It was also only a week earlier than the latest 25°C on record in 1938 (October 27). The highest temperatures were east and southeast of the city with highs near 26 and 27°C, more than 15°C above normal. Sprague was the hotspot with a high of 27.2°C, smashing its old record of 23.9°C in 1953. Records were also broken in Steinbach, Wasagaming and Gretna, among others. I had posted a list of some of the records here.
The warmth continued into early October 21. Very warm overnight lows occurred with a low of only 17.6°C at Winnipeg Airport up to 8 am. This was about 8 to 10°C warmer than the normal high for the date. Falling temperatures later in the day behind a cold front prevented a daily high minimum record from being broken.
Thunderstorms were also more frequent than usual this October with two thunderstorm days at the Airport (October 7 and October 21). This ties for 4th most since 1953. Thunder was also reported in the south side of the city on October 1st, resulting in three thunderstorm days in the south end. The thunderstorm reported at the Airport on October 21 was the 10th latest occurrence of a thunderstorm at the Airport since 1953.
A significant cool down late month dropped the monthly average temperatures, making October only tied for 41st warmest since 1872. The temperature did not reach the freezing mark in Winnipeg on Halloween with a high of only -1.9°C at the Airport. This was the first Halloween to not reach the freezing mark since 2006. Snow also fell on numerous occasions late month but Winnipeg managed to escape the worst. Lake effect snowsqualls dumped over 5 cm locally east and west of the city.
